C36 Newbie...

thanks for lettin' me on here folks!
I'm the (new) happy owner of a '95 C36 I just brought in from Japan. The car's a hoot to drive!
(I bought it for my wife, but I think I'll be test driving it for a while to make sure it's ok for her )
My Dad has a '94 S600 2 door we brought in a few months ago... also a sweet car!
I think I'll likely be poking around this site frequently...

Interesting.... I take it that these are Right Hand Drive models?

Forgive me - but since I know very little about these models - can you tell me why they would be brought in from Japan? Is there something about them, that can not be obtained here to begin with?

Thanks for posting the pictures...

I've brought in the C36, a '95 model with 71,000kms, for my wife from Japan. It's left-hand drive (the proper side for here). All the C36's are lefties I think...
Why from Japan? Condition, low kms., and end price. It's easy to find a vehicle there with low kms. and they are generally immaculately kept, driven more for recreation, on smooth, no salt roads.
I got my Dad a 2 door '94 S600 (also lefty) with about the same kms. He teared up when it arrived... it was in showroom condition... so beautiful!
I have brought in 5 cars so far, all for family members. The others are all high output import cars, including my '94 RX7 with only 20,500kms.
The C36 is a blast for a daily driver though!

Very interesting - thanks for the explanation. The S600 is a beauty as well. The V-12's are so smooth that it's hard to tell if they are running or not ;-)

FWIW,

There were somewhere around 5200 C36's made worldwide. Not many made it to Canada though... somewhere I read only 50? If they're still here, they're likely in rough shape with our winters and rough roads. The C36 was an AMG-modified C280. The 2.8 ltr. in-line six was stroked to 3.6 ltrs. to give it around 275hp. It also had other performance upgrades like much larger brakes, larger/wider wheels and some body kit.
They cost just under $50,000US back in the day. It's supposed to be a very reliable powertrain (fingers crossed).
Dad's S600 is a European spec car and when it was new it sold for $133,000 US. (I bought it for around $3,000 in Japan and it cost me about $3,500 to bring it here) Some executive must have owned it because the interior was like new... like it lived in a garage most of the time.

Hello zes-en-dertig:
Again - very interesting. The M/B in-line sixes have been around for a very long time and I'm sure that M/B has had most of the bugs worked out of them. In-line sixes and V12 are naturally well balanced and very smooth in operation. With reasonable care most of them will run far over 200,000 miles without any major problems.

On most cars that are now 15 to 20 years old - the major problem areas are the electronics. Corrosion at the electrical connectors is usually at the base of poor performance etc. Followed by dried/cracked vacuum and fuel lines.

I'm somewhat surprised that they were able to get 3.6L out of an existing 2.8L engine. With other 2.8L in-line sixes I'm familiar with - the most you can get with a large stoke increase and large overbore is 3.1L

$6500.00 for an S600 with 71,000 kms {44K miles} delivered to your door seems like a bargain to me!!

I'm sure you and your Dad will enjoy owning them...

FWIW,
Carl B.

"The AMG 3.6 M104 was rated at 276 horsepower (206 kW) at 5,750 rpm and 284 foot-pounds force (385 N·m) of torque at 4,000 rpm using the HFM engine management system.
The boost in power was obtained by stroking the 2.8 litre M104 using the crank from the 350sd engine."

I'm not sure if the wiring harness issues have been addressed on this car? Maybe a mechanic could tell if it's original or not. On my father's car one of the electronic throttle bodies has been replaced prior to us getting it. We will be rewiring the other one very soon as we are starting to get the ASR problem...
