sleazy used mercedes sales tactics

went out here in atlanta yesterday and looked at two cars. one ragged out one at a towing place for $750 and one parked at a house on the side of the road that still had the auction info written on the wind shield. i stopped and looked at that one and talked to the seller who told me he had just picked it up at a car auction.

tonight i got home from work and checked craigslist.

the $750 car was now advertised by someone for $1200 as just needing paint and "tlc" it had been at the towing place in this crappy weather we have been having....the windows have been down in it for months!!! rain and snow. it had been abandoned and was being sold by the place that towed it in. you can imagine.

the auction car was advertised as being sold by the original owner who had the car since new and his wife now wanted to buy a new honda and he hated to let it go.....failed to even mention the bad paint on the decks and top. totally lying about the car!!!!

caveat emptor!!! i have never seen such sleazy selling practices. it made me cringe thinking about the unsuspecting potential buyers and it really sharpened my buying skills now when going and looking at cars. i will never trust another craigslist ad the rest of my life!!!

Plus one on Kajtek1's welcome, lol.

Why the name Mercedes in the thread title?

You act as though no one lies when selling a used car, regardless of brand. Caveat emptor applies across the board.

You're also looking -- apparently -- for a bargain, maybe even a steal. The worst Mercedes (or BMW) is a cheap one. You'll spend more on deferred/ignored repairs and maintenance than had you just bought a better example.

Next time just take the blue pill.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

LOL. I've seen a craiglist ad for a good looking Mercedes at half blue book value. The ad was in December, the photos were 6 months older, posted on some website. In the ad, the seller mentioned that he was being shipped out to Afghanistan with his unit in 2 weeks, needed to sell the car quick, cash or money transfer only.

There's one born every minute... As long as this W.C.Fields slogan holds true, and the "good people" do not teach kids at school to open their eyes to the real world, exploiters and opportunists will keep multiplying like rabbits.

So the only bargains one can hope for, are getting what was asked for, and not being overcharged for it.

A car would show appreciation for preventive maintenance by never leaving his owner stranded.

That fits the pattern of "Nigerian scam"
Very popular with Ford Superduty trucks.
Do a search for "Lifted, crew cab, diesel" well bellow BB price and than you will learn that the seller just left the state and is shipping the truck to you free of charge after you put 50% deposit on the purchase price.

LOL, just look at my sig below

Like everything though, sometimes things can be had for a steal, you just have to be careful. The first thing I do when I've narrowed down what I want to buy is grab the vin number and pull the car fax or review the seller's package from the transportation authority (here in Canada anyway) which tells you the branding, all the owners by name, past and present and also outstanding liens if any. Lot of useful info to be had for less than $40 that could save you thousands in the long run.

A Benz is like a good wife: Not overly expensive to maintain, but neglected gets expensive awfully quick!

I bought a 1992 300SL off CL for $5000.00. It didn't pass smog and the AC didn't work. I took to PO to small claims court. Got awarded $1800.00 for all the smog work I had to do. PO appealed and we went back to court. This judge was VERY upset with how he misrepresented the car. I waiting to see what this judgement will be. Hopefully more money and/or he has to buy the car back. You don't have to take getting ripped off laying down.

Yup ... to that, you can add:
"Fast car!"
"Blacked out Benz"
"Caviar taste on a Budweiser budget"
"Loads of fun"

Run - don't walk - to your nearest trustworthy mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection!
