I expect MB to be accountable for limiting this consumable item.

I am not much a programmer, but I would assume that such procedure would take one of the CIA computers?
When a key on one of my MB stop working, the service adviser said "it died".
How passive electronic chip in dry key can just die?

Update

Mercedes never called me back yesterday so I called them this morning.

They had lost my notes? They did transfer me to Justin the Regional Manager and he advised that Mercedes would not assist in any way.

Yes most of you were correct.

I thought when ordering a key at the dealer, the customer gets 2 choices, new key or replacement key.
For "new", the dealer will erase all "key#" in memory, start from key#1. Any key(s) that the customer have will no longer work.
For "replacement", the key number goes up by 1. Other old key(s) still work.
Apparently, 8 is the limit but "new" order should work in this "Car Written off by Key" case.

It is not passive. Each time you insert and turn key rolling code gets overwritten. On ML's typical failure scenario is attempt to start with dead battery. You turn key to start, starter goes click, there is not enough electricity to finish writing process. Key is history.

EEPROM in the key has limited number of write cycles.
