Balance Shaft Failure on 350 engine

I own a 2007 CLK350 cab with 62,000 miles on it. I have experienced no problems with the car. However, I am very concerned about the balance shaft failure issue with the 350 engine. My engine number falls into the categrory of those with the defective shaft, sprocket, etc...

Since this engine is so widely used, I wonder how many owners have exprienced this engine failure? I am trying to decide whether to trade my car before it has a problem, or buy an extended warranty for it.

I have seen estimates of from $4,000 to $8,000 for this repair. What have other 350 (272 engine) owners done?

More panic mongering.

The problem exists only with early versions of this engine and dealer tech bulletins list engine serial numbers possibly affected.

Panic mongering? This is a request for information. As the respondent seems to drive diesel engines that are not included in this problem, I don't value the response.

Does anyone know the number of engines involved, and what does "possibly affected" mean? My understanding is all the engines below engine # 272... 30 468993 have substandard shafts from a supplier. I would love to find this is not true.

I am not a panic monger, and I don't want to be the victim of panic mongering. But I would like some facts.

Just got my 2006 clk 350 with 78k mi on it. After reading the news on this board, it kind of make me nervous. The car runs great. I checked the classaction lawsuit on all the listed vehicle and my clkys 350 is not on the list like some of you guys said.
Any info with be appreciated.

Welcome to the nervous club. I believe your car is included, based on the technical service bulletin sent out by Mercedes. They designated car models
Model 209.356/372/456/472 with the M272 engine up to the engine number I mentioned above as susceptible to the problem. Maybe someone else can tell me if I am mistaken.

I don't know why the CLK350 designation is left out of the class action suit. I would like to know.

How do we get involved. I was quoted 7K and I have only had the car 2 months. I am beyond frustrated.

Sorry to say it but you are screwed like all of the others that have this problem. Mercedes got away with this one. GM was forced to warranty their timing chains on their 3.6 V6 for 120k miles. You are probably going to pay something to get this fixed, like 63% of MB very expensive repair cost. I would suggest that you go to the dealer that sold you this car and complain to them that they hid the potential defect from you and see what they can do for you. Maybe they will give you a break on the repair cost.

I seriously doubt that it was even sold by an MB dealer. It sounds like it came from a used car lot or another brand of car maker that had it on their used lot.
