Ok - An update.
I have pretty much used up all the 'original' fuel (half tank delivered with the car). Filled up a new tank (65 litres) of Premium Unleaded Mobil fuel, driven 600 km and the problem still exists. When driving at any speed with the sir con on or just the air con off but the fan still on, when I brake at a traffic light or going around a bend the very very strong smell of rotten eggs comes through into the cabin. The air con evaporator has been cleaned and dis-infected. Air filters replaced. The diagnostic system does not show up any mal-functions either with the CATS, Lambda, O2 Sensors etc. Fuel parameters in DAS are set to 'base value'. No mis firing from any cylinders. Essentially no "stored' faults at all. I did however notice that when I pressed the cabin re-circulation button, no smell comes into the cabin - not surprising as this option on means air is re-circulating. THis also confirms that these 'smells' or exhaust fumes are being drawn externally when the re-circ is off. All seals and drains under neath the car have been checked and found OK.
One independent tech told me in 34 years of him working with MB this is the first time he has ever experienced this. Another told me that there were just three he had comes across while working in Dubai. Apparently this happened in those instances where after rear end accident damage, the left and rear vents in the wheel arches where placed back to front so that when the car brakes, exhaust fumes that waft up from under the car got sucked in.
I have had enough of this and just want to get it fixed. Anyone ..any suggestions ? Please ?
