Want to give 99 C280 to son

As my son gets his license next month I'd like to give him our 99 C280. 217,000 miles but needs a fair amount of work. My debate is whether I should put the $2000 +/-into it, or sell and buy another used MB. Trusted indie MB mechanic quotes $900 for plugs & wires, $150 alignment, $550 to replace tranny speed sensor (using existing tranny fluid and filter just replaced last week when car went into Limp mode), unknown cost at this time for new pads and rotors. In the last year I've replaced the radiator and water pump. Power seat motor works sporadically, so another unknown cost.

It's been a great car for the 7 years we've owned it and I really like the idea of my son having a car that is safe and that none of us are worried if it gets dinged up a little.

Anyone else wrestling with this with their kids?
