Older Mercedes (to 85 ?) use hexagonal (allen) bits, plus a few torx incl airbag.
Later models triple square, and a few torx bits.
Male star bits come either solid or tamper proof (hole).
For new BMW there are 5 point star bits,
then there are 6 point star torx bits (on older Mercedes needed for air bag),
plus 12 point triple star bits (also called spline) Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche etc).
For 8 point star bits you'll have to spend $ at the 'snap on,' mac, matco and so forth trucks.
OZ wheels uses rare 10 point star bolts / bits.
The fine lines of triple square star (= 12 point spline) inserts damage easily, and may be superseded in new model cars by (good for more torque) 'Star Plus' (designation TP) and Ribe bits.
Most of these are also available as female sockets.
