5 year 1991 300D owner; removing head
In 2005 I purchased my first Benz, a '91 300D 124 chassis 2.5 TurboDiesel. I had contemplated a Diesel for years, drove a Mitsubishi Diesel Van in Japan for three years, which ran great, and looked like The Mystery Machine.
I've been quite faithful in maintaining my Benz, I work with a local independent mechanic on the Mid-Atlantic coast to restore all malfunctioning systems.
I am in the Midwest now and replacing the head gasket- I have been tracking a small coolant leak on starboard side #5 cylinder at block/head junction, and finally the gasket finally blew through- bad overheating, exhaust gasses bubbling through the coolant, tested for hydrocarbons in coolant, popping the resevoir cap. So I am nicely set up in a heated garage, have cleaned and disassembled to the point of being ready to remove the head, and am stuck on how to handle the timing chain/cam sprocket/chain guide issue, I just cannot figure out how to remove them, pull the head around this assembly, without slacking the timing chain on the internal sprocket teeth. I will wind on a new chain as well, though I don't know the best point in the job to do that.
I am working without a specific shop manual, the local parts dealer keeps promising to print out the job for me but has not come through. Local library has big 1991 foreign Chilton's, which is some help, but not specific enough for my model. They are ordering the specific manual though, due in sometime this week. I do have the Technical Companion, which has excellent information on timing chains, valve jobs, upper end work.
My websearch brought me to this forum, I read Zeitgeist's '90 300D head gasket article, I learned a great deal about the job, and will search for more information.
Thank you, and I look forward to learning and including tips on what I've learned. My Benz is at 325K miles, I bought her at 224K miles, my goal is to go beyond 500K miles.
