Unhappy 1999 SLK230, LIMP, Delayed start...

After a recent fix Of backup lamp switch in gear shift assembly, after I put
it together car is in Limp mode and car will not start until 3-5 seconds after
key is turned. Seems like battery is dead, but all indicators light up and
then after 3-5 seconds, you hear a beep and car turns over. I have done much reading and just think I am missing something simple. I have taken out the gear shift again, took it apart, looks ok to me (BTW, back up lights now work) and after I put it together, the car started immediately, but car still ran in LIMP mode(starts out what appears to be 2nd gear but never shifts. Could the car think its being stolen? I am pondering this now. I have actually set the alarm off while in the car. Seems I hit the buttons, unlocking and locking doors as I am trying to start car.
.
.
I have no check eng light. The last thing I did was removed +POS battery
terminal and connected it to ground (to try to clear any codes). I also feel
that maybe its the circuit board in the Gear Shift Assembly? What is its
purpose? Bad Circuit board? bad contacts on this board or no contact being
made???

I am pondering the circuit board in the gear shift. What is its function? Does it tell the Car "I am in Park", but it doesnt recognize until few seconds later, thus my delayed start? Then when I shift, mechanically it is in gear, but tranny doesnt know which gear (no sig from circuit board), so it stays in 2nd (limp). I have reverse and 2nd mechanically... I wish I knew how to troubkeshoot this borad. Attached is a crude view of board.

First thing I would do is to have the transmission codes read.

Musikmann,
Thx for reading and replying, but I think I have it FIXED!!!!... Contacts on the circuit board were not making good contact between Long Contact Strip and the Various contact point pertaining to PRND4321. Cleand both circuit board contacts as well as contacts on pendulum. Car started right up (which seems to confirm my theory that car didnt think it was in PARK. Happy camper, Beer break!
