MDX or GL450?

Had dinner with friends last night and they asked for advice if they should get a 2008 Acura MDX with 29K miles on it, or a 2008 GL450 with 33K miles on it. Acura is $1000 cheaper. I thought no better place to ask than this forum. Any advice and suggestions I can pass on?

Well what are their requirements for the new SUV? Both seat 7, but the GL has a much more accommodating third row and more cargo area. The GL will also tow more.

The MDX has a third row more suitable for smaller children. But it will also handle much more car like and sporty.

After driving MDX's for almost 10 years (we still have an '04) I can tell you about their weaknesses. Transaxles are a problem. If it's not bearing noise it is hardened seals. If you don't mind the noise and don't mind driving for a few miles to warm up the seals and get 4th shift or torque converter lock up you can expect 100 to 125Km between rebuilds. Later (08 to 10 models have suspect fuel injectors. The rear window wiper will stiffen up and after about 3 months of wear start to clean only the bottom 1/2 of the rear window. The rear hatch release will slow bind and eventually force you to reseat ir every time you use it or the rear door will not close properly. The engines seem to be bullit proof. The depreciation seems similar to the Mercedes (doesn't hold value very well IMO). The ride is excellent and lends itself to long trips. Fuel economy is good comapred to other SUV's. Handling is also very good. They are excellent in the snow and will take you almost anywhere you want to go.

These are my experiences over 10 years driving in southern Canada.

If it were my choice I would go Mercedes primarily because of my experience with the car portion of the Mercedes lineup.

If its only 1K cheaper, definately go with MB. Have you given any thoughts to the ML series. Got mine 1 month ago (2008 ML 320CDI) runs like a charm and great gas mileage. Going to ML series(cheaper than GL) would make it easier on the pocketbook.
Good Luck
