Its a pity that this engine is yet to make it to production. If freeing the engine from the clutches of the alternators and AC compreesor can increase eficiency of it by upto 4 km to a liter, freeing the valve gear functionality from the engine would result in some 10 km to a liter mileage improvement!
Maintaining magnetism required for the solenoid switches at temperatures over 1800 degree C could be the challange.
