If only i could go up a hill...

My 2002 ML320 can barely go up a hill.

I figured this was more of a general car problem than model specific, so ill put it in the general forum.

I live in a very hilly area, and going up one, I have to have my foot to the floor to go up to 45mph.

It used to be able to go up decently more. It has about 90 thousand miles. I bought it used at about 30k miles, but I think its still the stock filter.
I purchased a fuel filter, because my mechanic said he thought that that is the problem, but he couldn't replace it due to some health issues.

Do you think this is just the fuel filter? I know the possibilities are catalytic converter, or fuel pump. But those are expensive!

What do you think the problem is? Thanks!

Welcome, please click user cp and add your vehicle and location to your profile, it's useful information.

What do I think the problem is? Your mechanic. Or lack of one. That's like not going to the dentist with a toothache because he's on vacation. When it's important, you get it taken care of.

Cats are a known weak link in several models in that year range. If clogged, they can act just like that. How is your fuel economy? If it is really bad, it's more likely the cats than the fuel filter. That said, however, if you have 90K miles on the original filter, uh, get it changed asap. You're causing an undue strain on the fuel pump, which is more costly as well. There a several possibilities, but why guess on an internet forum? Take it in and get it diagnosed and fixed. You're not saving any money by burying your head in the sand, true?

But find another mechanic. Preferably an indie, and one whose health is not such that he can't work on your truck.

Good luck.
