There is no comparison between AMG and a 'normal' Merc. The build quality is so much better for the AMG. It is not just the motor but the thickness of the leather and carpets, woodwork and trim etc are so much better.
I have had an ML320 and now have a ML55 AMG. The 5.5 litre motor (do not touch the supercharged ones) is bullet proof. Only disadvantages are - higher petrol (gas) costs, higher insurance and a stiffer ride especially in the back seats.
Once you have had an AMG Mercedes-Benz - you will never be happy with a standard one every again!

The C55 has significantly more handling than a regular C Class with only a modest loss of ride quality. The front seats are much more comfortable. Additional cost will be tires that might last 15K on the rears and 25k on the fronts. Most AMG cars seem to have insufficient width rear tires with the added HP. More gas and brake replacement, and minor increase in oil changes. Insurance cost increase are minimal as the cars do not have a bad industry experience rating. They can be had used for bargain prices. I've seen several very clean well maintained one owner cars (such as my former). Buy one and you'll never go back to a non-AMG MBZ.
