New Member - Engine Light On - 2006 SL55

Greetings, this is my first post. I just bought a 2006 SL55 with 41Kmiles and within one day from driving it off the lot, the Engine Light came on. I bought the car from another dealer (Jaguar)

Any advice on what could be wrong. Is there a Code Reader for this model or should I just take it to the local Mercedes.

Thanks in advance for your advice in this matter.

Welcome to Benzworld, the diagnostic equipment for this car is STAR diagnostics also called SDS, try a local indie or specialist who has this equipment.

ERIC.

Or if you're handy you can buy an OBD2 scanner and check for codes yourself. Or some auto parts places will read them for free. Either way post them on the R130 Roadster forum (native forum for your car) and someone there will likely be able to help.

p.s. There is no good and affordable alternative device for a STAR diagnosis.

p.p.s. What about asking the Jaguar dealer to have a look?

Took it to the local Mercedes and they say its the secondary air injection pump and relay. Total cost $1988.

I can’t believe I just got hit with a bill and only had the car less that 48hrs in my possession.

I asked about this being under a recall and did not get an answer - waiting to talk to the service advisor on this issue.

Anyway, it appears the Warranty (Fidelity) covers this - I hope.

Thanks for the help.

Most engine check lights relate to the emissions system, from gas caps to cats. While generic code readers will identify, if you're lucky, a specific part, the Mercedes software allows the tech to actually test the part while it's still in the car. For instance, on your pump, the SD software would have been able to energize the pump so that the tech could confirm that it was spinning up, that the wire harness was connected and that there wasn't some other fault.

>>I can’t believe I just got hit with a bill and only had the car less that 48hrs in my possession.

I got some suspicion.
For some particular OBDII code, the computer only logs it after some driving. For the code associated with "air injection pump and relay", could the seller reset the Check Engine Light before the buyer picks up the car? Only after some driving, the CEL came on.
In California, no car can pass smog check if CEL is on. The smog computer also knows if the CEL got cleared manually. In such tampering case, the owner must drive the car at least 100 miles before smog re-test.

You may want to tell Fidelity that "I can’t believe I just got hit with a bill and only had the car less that 48hrs in my possession."
If they're hit with a bill, let them investigate.

I bought a Fidelity extended warranty for my E-Class. So far they have paid for everything that went wrong. The only downside with them is they typically send an inspector to look at the car before approving the claim.

Ditto to mbvis too. I bought a used S-Class that tripped a CEL during the test drive. They said they fixed it and I picked it up on a Thursday. On Sunday it reappeared. Took it back and they said it needed all 4 O2 sensors replaced. I demanded my traded in E-Class and they really hosed me on the backwards deal.

I guess my point is that they probably did exactly what mbvis suspects with your car but that little scam had not occurred to me until just now.

Too much. I did a search for an Air Pump for a 113 engine. $235

Fidelity knows already - the Service Advisor tried to charge the parts and Fidelity doesn’t even have the contract yet in their possession. I can only imagine their faces when they were called that a claim was being put in on a contract that still had the ink wet. I bet they will investigate this one.

I hope this is not a sign of worst things to come.

After 25+ years in the Army, I really want to enjoy this car and forget the times behind the wheel of a Humvee.

Thanks for the replies

Just thought of something else. When I bought my Fidelity warranty there was a 30 day waiting period unless I paid something like $50 for an inspection. I did that and all the tech found was a questionable engine air filter. It might be different now because I went through this during the summer of 2008.
