+1 on snow tires. They make a noticable difference, even over all season tires.

When you brake, imagine there is an egg under your foot. If you stomp too hard, the egg will brake and you'll slide. Easy, progressive pressure.
Rolling tires don't slide unless you turn too fast for the level of traction, accelerate too hard or brake too hard.
If you slide, fight your instinct to brake. You're much better off letting off the gas and steering the car. All hard braking does is cause you to have less control over the car. ABS just isn't great on snow & ice. In fact, some hate it in these conditions.
