When I worked on my system, the pump would move the gauge to the scale of 30, I am not sure if that was mm Hg or what, but it was about 70% of the scale on standard vacuum gauge.
Don't know if that will be good news, but most common problem on aging system is rubber diaphragm breaking apart. New elements are available and for some models you can buy diaphragms alone and rebuild.
