sounds of machine gun fire while door tries to lock

I have a 2007 B200 turbo. We bought it last year and have had no problems with it until about a month ago. My passenger side door started making a horrible machine gun fire kind of noise when I attempted to lock it. It doesn't do this every time, but probably about 80% of the time. And then will not lock. All 3 other doors will. I thought it maybe was my remote lock battery .... except it also does this when I lock the car from the inside.

Last night I believed the car was locked, only to come out this morning to find out that apparently it wasn't, as someone had rifled through it. Just looking for change I suspect as they left the gps and all the ipod gadgets.

Anyone know what is causing this? I don't want to take it to the dealer and get dinged with a $500 service charge when all it needed was a spray of WD40!

Also, I have rust on the inside of my hatchback door. And the lining around the stick is "rough" and peeling. I've actually cut myself on this! Are these common problems with a B200?? I'm really disappointed! I drove a Kia previously and never had these problems!!

any suggestions would be most appreciated! And I know absolutely nothing about cars, so the most basic explanation would be the most helpful!!

thanks again!

Thumbs up

Same thing happened on my 2007 GL450. MB tech found "that rubber boot on lock rod in door is causing lock rod to make jumping noise. Applied lube and trimmed boot. Checked functions after repairs. Central locking operates as designed."
