Advice on second-hand transmission purchase

Hi all.
I own a W202 and would like some advice please. The transmission has started playing up seriously. It has in the past been shifting very hard from 1st to 2nd and I was advised, from the burnt condition of the oil during a service, that it appeared as though the friction lining of the clutch plates were gone. It will now not select reverse immediately and takes a while before the car will move. I have been advised that I need to have the box overhauled at a cost of in excess of $3k.
I have since found out that I can get a second-hand box a lot cheaper and would like to ask the members of this forum if it is wise to buy a second-hand transmission over the internet or if someone can perhaps recommend a good supplier?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have seen numerous comments that it is less expensive to buy an already rebuilt transmission. But I don't know if this is true in your part of the world. In the US Jasper is a well known and recommended company for American cars but I don't know what they do for MBs.

Thanks for the info Musikmann. I was actually considering purchasing the transmission over the internet from a USA breaker yard and having it shipped to my home. I have already done some research and see that there are some available for around $700 + shipping, which in my opinion is quite reasonable.
After reading this post, http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...ssion-faq.html , I am now a little confused as to what transmission is actually in my car. The article states that vehicles manufactured between 1997 and 2003 have the 722.6 transmission. So what is in my car? Somewhere in that article there is also an image of the shifter electronics and my car does not have that but it does have a summer/winter selector switch. Can you or someone else tell me what box is in my car? I am currently about 10000 miles away from the car so can't go and have a look. The VIN number is ADB2020286F330447 if that is of any help.

WOW, thanks very much Shaune55, much appreciated. Those are the exact specs for my car, correct engine number and code for the Becker radio. Now I can use the info to get some prices for a repair.
Obviously this information is not readilly available to every Tom, Dick and Harry - thanks again.

I would not buy a used transmission over the internet. I put a used transmission in my wife's Honda a few years ago. I had a shop order it from a local wrecking yard that he deals with frequently, the theory being that since they do a lot of business with him they would send him a good one. The one they sent him was dripping black fluid and looked worse than the one I was replacing. To the shops credit they said they would not install it, and made the yard bring a good one. The used transmission worked well for the year before we sold the car. If you get a junk transmission over the internet, what do you do?

$700 for a used MB transmission raises a red flag for me. I think that would probably be junk and a waste of money. As advised, buy one from some company local to you that will stand behind the part.

Thanks to all for the advice offered. Armed with the information that Shaune55 gave me I was able to contact a repairer who said that he would be able to repair the box for less than $1000,00. I will give him a chance but expect that the actual bill will be a bit higher as I am sure that he will find some other problems when he opens the box.

Just for the record one of the breaker-yards that responded to my query had a CARFAX (not sure who these people are) verification that the mileage on the box was only 60000m and also had some testimonials from some "satisfied" customers.

Thanks again for all the advice, I will take the car in to have the box done when I am back home again.

CARFAX is a reporting agency here is the US. In my limited experience they are not always trustworthy. Good news that yours can be fixed for somewhere close to $1000.
