ML 350 Wipers Acting Intermittently then turning off - please help

I know there are zillions of posts on intermittent wipers, but this one seems different.
Here's the description:
Wipers function normally, and at the beginning when needed, function well, both in rain sensing automatic, as well as the two speeds.
After "a while" (could be a minute, could be ten minutes, could be that it doesn't happen at all that time), they go crazy.
> They either stay on even in the "O" position
> Or they turn off by themselves, parking in the middle of the windshield, and only if you turn the switch on and off, restart.

And then, they just park somewhere, not necessarily at the bottom, and refuse to come back on. Until you park the car, turn it off and on again, then they work again. Until they don't, which (see above) can be a few seconds, minutes, or hours.

Just took a 100-mile trip in the rain, it was NOT fun. Or safe to keep pulling off the highway to restart the vehicle.

Any ideas? The rest of the truck (2006 ML350 with 60k miles) works fine. Oh well I am getting an alarm signal saying one of the driving lights is off (front right), but that's intermittent as well. Battery charging well, no other issues.

I don't want to get taken to the cleaners if I take it to a shop or (God forbid) the dealer.

Thank you!!!

The intermittent action stops if it's turned on and off.
I think it's the electrical contact problem inside the stalk/knob for controlling the wipers.
Go to the forum for your ML, some people may have had similar problem.

Thank you, mbvis.
What baffles me is that ultimately, after acting screwy, the wipers just shut down altogether. And the only thing that fixes them is actually turning the car off, then on.
Feels like an old Windows computer, huh? CTRL-ALT-DEL the car!
I am just so scared of chasing this problem with dollars... I wish they would just quit altogether so the fix could be proven.
Wait and see when I take it to the mechanic: They will behave 100% perfectly...!
I will continue to hunt around in the forums.
Thank you!
