Unhappy 1984 380 se owner

I am frustrated new owner. My car has only 102K and looks like new. Seat covers and full floor covering since new. However it was parked for 7 years before I bought it from the origional owner. As you might guess every seal leaked on the car. I have invested $9,000 to stop all the oil leaks and other service item due to things drying out. A complete engine tear down was part of the adventure. When we had the engine apart we found no evidence of wear on the engine. I stillhave isues with warm starting and a blown high preassure A/C line. That's the last part I have left to replace in the A/C system. As of now I have $12,000 invested and a very angry wife. I am about ready to give up even though other Benz guys tell me to keep it. I have a for sale sign in the car, but I don't think I will ever get anything near my investment. What do you guys think?

I can truly understand your frustration. I just bought a 83 280sel in mint cosmetic condition. It too is full of issues; leaks, tranny, no heat and the list goes on. I have about 5k invested but an contemplating cutting bait.

Good luck my friend.

There will be more

The car sitting 7 years in a garage in Arizona had dried out. The semi retire MB mechanic friend that pulled the engine put in $1900 in parts. He only charged me $1200 labor. The MB dealer would have charged 3-4 times as much. I will be lucky to recoup 50% of my investment if I sell. Some guys tell me to keep the car after I have done this much to it, but I never seem to be done.

Yeah, the gen one 126s should be considered a vintage MB not to be purchased from private sellers. Even with a PPI the age and complexity of the cars requires professional restoration prior to sale. The days of the $4000 sale price 126 needing $2000 of work to be serviceable are pretty much over.

As an aside, Anderson Moore’s grey market 280 SEL may be worth retaining and ‘investing’ in as it wasn’t sold in the US market, and is somewhat rare.
