2002 E320 4Matic - Transmission Gremlin?

Drove the wagon for the first time today to a drive-thru less than 4 miles away.
Got my stuff & was about 400 yards away when the engine raced & I noticed I was decelerating. I looked and noticed I hadn't accidentally knocked it out of gear, then pulled over and put on my hazard lights. While waiting for AAA, I decided to turn it off & pull the key to see if it was a reset issue. It was and I was able to drive it home.

Questions:
1) Is this something that I need to have serviced immediately, or is it the first sign of a future problem?

2) What's the possible service cost on something like this ( e.g. new RPM sensor)?

Thanks

I think that your tranmission should be OK in low temps. We had a similar fault posted here yesterday. You should consider getting your stored fault codes read.

In your model (W210) I think that the ETC control module (N15/3) is located under a removable plate in the passenger footwell, beneath the carpet. Quite easy to access. (ETC is sometimes referred to as EGS)

Start with checking fluid level. Even if you don't have a leak -in colder temperatures it "shrinks" and low level drops even lower.
That said, I have once a month gremlins on our transmission, what I believe is same as yours. New plug, new electric plate, full flush done 10 k miles ago followed with additional partial fluid change when electric plate was replaced, yet once a month transmission acts like low on fluid, or would not upshift. So far the problems always did go away, but it gets scary.

Sounds like you accidentally performed a "manual" downshift by knocking the shift lever to the side.

Thanks for the replies. I'm off to the shop today to have the codes checked.
Any ideas on costs for these sensor replacements?

Transmission work will be expensive. You have a W210 and should check the sticky threads on our forum, found in the sedans section. Good luck.

Don't know if you found out any thing but this sounds like what happened to me last month. The filter was plugged up on my 2002 e320 4matic. Clutch lining was stopping it up, when you shut it off the suction stopped and let the debris fall out but it will probably come back if it hasn't already. I changed my filter and fluid. But any time you have something plugging a filter it is NOT GOOD. The fluid is supposed to be Lifetime fill and never changed. Right... I would like to know what you found out at the shop.

This happened on my 03 320 4matic, and they told me it was a shift plate in the trans. It wound up costing me $1250.00 plus labor...ARG
