I bought the car at the auction, so I am the insurance company, no pun intended. The car was 'totaled out' after hitting a mailbox. The damage was very minimal, but enough to deploy steering and knee airbags, plus driver seat belt and both rear outside seat belts. We were able to start the car several times after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. An electrical tech determined that the pyrofuse is blown, but he was able to start the car anyways. Well now, it's in my garage and it wont start, and I can't get the guy to come to my house (he's pissed because I negotiated his price down, and then still overpaid imo). I'd like to know how he was able to start the car so I can drive it back to him and settle our differences. How difficult is it to change the prefuse box?

I cannot follow which car are we talking about now?

If the car has a pyro-fuse and this fuse is gone, there is no way to start the car. It is not difficult to change the pyro-fuse but the SRS system might need "a reset". Also if the issue was at the pre-fusebox, not that difficult to change that either but has someone measured the fuses if they are good or not?

The engine would not fire up if the starter was activated "manually". As long as you do not make a short-circuit from the tick power wires to ground, it would be safe to test the starter motor. To make it easier to avoid short circuits, you can pulse the starter from the starter relay instead of the starter motor solenoid.

It would be useful to subscribe to startekinfo for WIS when working with the car for issues like this. Actually a Star diagnosis tool would be very useful too.

Idk, but the technician who diagnosed it said there's not enough voltage going to the starter. He stated that the pyro fuse is designed to deploy when the airbags deploy. He needed me to take the car home in order to free up space in his garage. Idk what he did to start the car, but he got under it and told me when to start.

The car didn't start when I first got it from the auction, but after screwing steering with the battery and the cables for a while, it started. Then I eventually took it to the technician that I mentioned above to install new seat belts and reset srs. I did not take it to him for starting issues. He disconnected the battery at some point and from that point the vehicle didn't start again. That's when he ran some tests and determined that there's not enough voltage to the starter. He's sure it's the pyro fuse. So I called the dealer to order a pyro fuse, and the parts guy says he's never heard I'd it. So I call another dealer, and again, he's never heard of it. After giving some details to parts guy, he tells me that it's the pre-fuse that I need. So I ordered it and now im ready to install it. I plan on disconnecting battery, then replacing the fuse. I hope that's all there is to it. I'll wait a few days to allow for some responses for approval or disapproval. Thanks for your help so far. I just wanna drive my new car asap.

Heres what you need to replace.

Your welcome

- Rebuilt a few Newer Mercedes, more car for your money! Usually keep for 6 months then sell and buy another.
This fuse "box" not sure what the term for it is but its the long fuse with the RED(Positive Terminal) This is where you would also attach cable to jump.

Replace that and it should start up!
