A140 fuel filter, maf or lambda or even the cat converter

Hi everyone,
Just joined, hope Im posting in the right place?
My missus just passed her test so thought I would get her a140 1998 semi automatic.
The car is absolutley mint full service history etc.
Problems started from day one it ran out of fuel when driving it home for the first time although I 100% put enough fuel in it.
Next day filled it up once it was was driven for half an hour, just seemed to struggle with power would bearly get over 3000rpm, blew black soot on ground when revved.
Let it cool down ran fine again untill warm.
Next day Did a 60 mile run in it got me where i needed to go but struggled with power again especially up hill, and using way to much fuel, engine sounds flat.
The car has new spark plugs and air filter.
Then today the cat went did hear a blow from exhaust but today it sounds like thunder.
Needless to say im not in the wifes good books lol.
Just wondered if anyone could kindly shed any light or ideas, have put in the title what i think it may be but any advice is appreciated.
Many thanks

I would replace the fuel filter to start. There is a DIY on how to change it. I've done mine twice, takes less than 20 min.

I might also consider disconnecting the battery to reset the computer.
