Ok, not so old as to be vintage.
I drive an 81 and an 85 300SD We went on our first long range trip over Thanksgiving, around 2200 miles. 336k and ~280k, respectively. I'm doing the WVO thing. Works great so far..
On the recent trip the 81 would sometimes develop abnormal sounds from the exhaust after extended periods of driving (at least a half hour). At first I thought the muffler came off. Then we pulled over and the sound dissipated, and sure enough the muffler was just fine. the rubbers holding it on the chassis were deemed to be severely deteriorated... perhaps it was wobbling around enough to smack around in the underbelly of the car, causing the alarming sounds. Zipties deployed for added support. This problem persisted intermittently until we reached our destination. Brewstore wort chiller/coolant heated fuel heat exchanger installed inline with the WVO feed in a Des Moins super Target parking lot at closing time in the cold. Oil now may flow properly through the non- winterized filter and I enjoy driving the rest of the brutally cold journey without stopping at a fuel station. My girl is royally pissed. New rubber hangers for the exhaust installed in Champaign. The way back we ran veggie. the mystery knock/bang noise was heard twice on the way home. Wierd. I don't know if the sound is coming directly from the engine or if the exhaust is rattling around. The exhaust gets louder sometimes and if you pull over and bring the car to a stop, it goes away, then you can drive again and sometimes the sound redevelops, sometimes not.
Ideas, comments, suggestions?
