I'm not quite familiar with the oldest models but the ones from the fifties actually have similar body style and model numbering. This site gives a lot of details:
Mercedes-Benz Baureihenverzeichnis

An example would be W136 from 1946 to 1955, e.g. 136.110, 170D or
W120, Ponton 180, from 1953 to 1962.

More info from the link for those who are interested.

Thanks for the interesting link. The site is cookies based, so my limited German help me find PDF with W numbers assigned to the models, but no years of production. Can you help me with this?

From the front page (of Mercedes-Benz Baureihenverzeichnis ), select from the "Starten mit" selection box "Baureihenverzeichnis - Auswahl über Baureihencode" instead of the pdf document. Next selection box "Bitte eine Baureihe auswählen:" lists body style numbers followed by the year range for production. Selecting a model and "weiter" gives further details.
