Post odometer reset when bulbs replaced on S500

I have a 1996 S500 and recently replaced all the bulbs in the speedo/tach display. I disconnected the entire unit to gain access but when it was replace, the odometer zeroed out.

Does anyone have a clue as to what happened?

Official Mercedes procedures ...

Star Service CDs and DVDs

... probably say to don't do that.

Perhaps a dealer can restore the mileage.
