Question Buying an old S420

Hello everyone.
I am a merc enthusiast and have owned a 190E (1991) and currently have a 300E (1992). I have decided to upgrade myself by buying a used merc S420. It is 176000 miles and has no major mechanical problems (I was told). The 'check engine' comes on and has been checked by merc mechanics. Everything is OK.
What things should I need to be aware, BEFORE I buy this merc? What are the well known problems with this car? It is an V8 engine.
One more question - will the tires of my 300E fit to this s420?
Thank you guys. Yo have been awesome in replying to my querries in the past, too.
God bless you all.

I think that S420 is a W140 chassis. Why don't you try scrolling down from this general forum, look for the sedans section, find the W140 sub-forum, and ask your questions there? I think you will get quicker and more informed answers from some actual S420 owners.

p.s. I have to question the capabilities of any Mercedes mechanic who told you a check engine light is O.K.

Ditto on having the car rechecked by more qualified mechanic. I was on the market for S class several times, but even they have superior bodies -they never come with good diesels down to USA.
Besides the W126 off-course, but that is slow car.
The 420 engine was also used in W210 E-class sou you can find info about it in that section. Over the years I bought several high mileage Mercedes, including 320,000 miles W124 diesel and never had a major issues with them.
Good luck on the purchase.
