I am in the south of England with an old but reliable petrol C200 Estate with 145K miles, and a 2005 diesel E320 Avant Garde Estate which comes close to being one of the most unreliable vehicles I have had in over 40 years of motoring.
The E320 was bought in early 2009 with 70K miles from a reputable garage and, fortunately, the warranty has covered almost all problems; it has now done 85K. I week after purchase a front coil spring broke and the suspension collapsed whilst the car was stationary, so both springs were replaced (warranty covered only the broken one).
At 79K miles in Nov 09 the alternator failed so the regulator/cut out was replaced. 4 weeks later it failed again and the entire alternator was replaced.
A few weeks ago one of the headlights went out of alignment - reason unknown - and the adjuster was found to have been unmounted and ineffective. To fix this the front bumper/fender had to be removed and the headlight also to remount the headlight adjuster.
Now, this week, the preglow indicator lamp has started coming on again after a normal start up routine and it stays on for about a half mile before going out again. I see that an identical problem has occurred to another forum member in the US.
All in all I love my old C200 which is a great 'battle wagon' for all the rough jobs, but I regard the E320 as a horror which would have gone by now was if it not for my wife liking the beast so much. Our earlier W124 230TE Estate was great but thirsty. What will I get next? I don't know!
Regards to all.
