Fan Pulley Problem

I have an 88 300E, about 160K miles. The fan pulley has decided to go out of whack, and is out of vertical, with the bottom closer to the block than the top. That is causing it to rub on an unrelated bracket, making a heck of a racket and tossing flecks of metal around the engine compartment. I can move the pulley back to vertical with my hand and wobble it around. I have no idea where to start to fix this. Anybody else had this happen? Kind of bizarre. Thanks.

I bet it is time to replace it. Mine actually broke free and found the radiator. (different model but same engine as yours) Autohausaz will have the parts. Check the back of your fan clutch to see it any of it has broken. I have a feeling it has.

Bearing Bracket

crengel, I would speculate that the problem is the bearing bracket (pictured below). Please take the time to fill out your profile with all pertinent info, especially location. You might have an MB tech or more knowlegable forum member living nearby. Also the blue stickies at the top of each forum are filled with endless info, and the "search this thread" can provide a world of additional help. If it were my car I would be replacing: Bearing Bracket, Fan Clutch, Belt Tensioner, Accessory Belt Tensioner Shock, Belt, Thermostat, Coolant and maybe even the water pump. You're there now, may as well do it all. Let us know..............Thor

Thank you gentlemen. I've had this car for 3 years and have had to do nothing to it. This is my first foray into the engine compartment, of any substance, and I have no idea what I'm doing. Quite a bit different than my old Ford truck. I'm dead bottom of the learning curve at the moment, but it's steepening quickly. I am assuming it's the bearing bracket, which makes perfect sense. We'll see about the other stuff. I'm sure I'll be back to this thread over the next 24-48 hours with further stupid questions.

Thanks again.

Here's what happened with mine:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w126...-pump-but.html

It is not hard to do really. How bad are the fan blades at this point? It you get the bracket and clutch you will probably be okay. Check your belt too for wear. You just need to address this soon. If you need the pdf on doing some of this work, pm me. I have a paper copy but I should have the pdf saved somewhere.
