Intro - just bought a C220

I just purchased a 1994 C220 with looks to be a blown head gasket. I'm sure I'll figure it out soon enough, but what do you call the c220 series of Mercedes. For example I also have a 1988 325i which is also know as an e30.

Anyway, there's water in the oil and I can see some water vapor out the exhaust when it's running.

I going to do a lot of reading here, but if anyone has any advise, I welcome it. Obviously I'm going to need to pull the head off. I think I'm going to need the minimum parts...head gasket and new head bolts. I'll think I'll need to have the head shaved if it's warped. A quick check, looks like a head gasket and head bolts should be under $100. Does anyone know what a shop charges (ballpark) to shave the head? Do I need any special tools to get to and pull the head off?

Also, When driving it, I noticed that it shifts very hard in all gears. Any ideas on where to start with this...change the tranny fluid first?

Thanks all.

You sound very knowledgeable about mechanics. I'm just getting started but I wanted to say welcome even though I'm new here.
