New owner of a 1982 300D Turbo Diesel
My son and I (really, my son) are the proud owners of a '82 300D. What a cool car. The body and interior are in great shape.
My brother-in-law spotted it an hour away from where we live. Cal (son) and I really liiked it. The second time we looked at it, we cut a deal and drove it home. We are the 3rd owners. After looking at the service records we discovered that the first owner (he had it for 20 yrs) lived less than a mile from where we live (for the past 12 years) right now! Quite bizarre. He drove it regularly (except, no winters) and put 160,000 miles (out of 168,000 total) and serviced it meticulously at the local MB dealer here. The 2nd owner drove it sparingly for 8 years, changed the oil yearly and repaired fuel line, brake lines and some other small things. Now it's Cal and my turn.
The engine runs well however, it has some leaks. We're planning to replace the oil pan gasket immediately.
It's a bit slow off the line and the transmission slips a bit in 3rd and 4th. Probably my biggest concern. I think a fluid change and filter is in order but I also suspect vacuum issues.
The auto locks work with the car running but not when it's off. Definitely vacuum issues.
The tach isn't working. Not sure.
I would love to get everything working properly.
Please offer your opinion on the transmission, vacuum repairs, etc.
Also, where is the bst source for manuals?
Any help will certainly be appreciated.
