Post 1980 300TD Wagon (non turbo) possible injector pump issue...?

Thinking of purchasing a beautiful 1980 300TD Wagon which is a non-turbo...assuming the rear emblem is original (it says turbo). But....the seller says that the fuel injector pump needs to be replaced and he knows this because of the "color and odor of the smoke" and "the car won't get up to speed..." I haven't driven it yet myself so I can only take his word for it now.

I'm not sure if I should believe the seller who says his mechanic said that it isn't a blown head gasket....

I'm not sure if $300-800 is a fair price to fix it, either.

Please help
Suggestions...

Take the car to a MB tech you think you can trust for a pre-purchase inspection. You might discover other things that need attention. For any car that old, a couple of hundred bucks will be well spent.

Yes I agree. I don't know of any in San Diego, CA so I'll have to call around. My guy is in Missouri! I've been asking around, and most sources say that if the car needs an injector pump it most likely will need some calibration as well. One of my pals mentioned that this might not be such an easy thing.

If I could get it checked out by a MB specialist I know I'd feel much better. Heck the wagon has 267,000 miles so no telling what could go on it. No prior repair records or anything to look through sort of sours the deal too.

Thanks!

There is a section for recommended repair shops here on BenzWorld so you might look at that for someone in SD. And buying any used car with no service history is pretty risky at best.

Good luck finding a mechanic who still remember 30 years old technology
With 80 HP "the car wouldn't get up to speed..." straight from the factory line.
Good point is that parts for them are cheap. I bought motor mounts for W123 few years back for 9 dollars.
This way, or the other this is a project not the car you can drive to work tomorrow.
Than the real mechanic would fix the car before selling.
Good luck
