Should I buy this 300cd?

I have owned and thoroughly enjoy a 1976 4 spd 240d. 238k and still going strong. My wife's gasser (90 maxima) is finally dieing off and I have an opportunity to convert her to driving diesel.
I have located a 300cd that is in primo condition. 194k on the car.

I have two "fears". One is that my 240d is soooo simple and easy to work on. ANd feels so much lighter and smaller than the 300 even though it actually isnt.

Will I have the same positive feelings about the 300cd..will my wife? Even though I am a heavy do it yourselfer, I am feeling a little intimated by the massiveness of the 300 especially as compared to the extreme simplicity of the 240d.

Any words of wisdom or encouragement greatly appreciated.

Best thing you can do if you buy it is to change the two fuel filters, adjust the valves, and starting using fuel additive "Redline" makes a good project, every time you fill up.

And check to see that the heat works!

Enjoying 240D puts you on flat roads with not much traffic.
Those cars are rolling danger on California grades and traffic.
What year is 300cd? I drove almost all diesel MB sold in US for last 25 years and am familiar with the engines, although that car model was never sold here. Each generation of diesel engine is visible step up in technology.
Starting with 112 HP giving you 25 mpg in W123, coming up to 201 HP and 40 mpg in W211. Besides aluminum engine in 1986 and so-so 350 they are all bulletproof. Good luck on the purchase.

Is the 300CD a W123 or a W124?
