Exclamation HELP unable to remove key from ignition

Hello all,

I pulled into my driveway lastnite and couldn't remove the key from the ignition. I managed to remove the key with a bit of effort...but am now unable to reinsert the key into the ignition. It's basically not accepting the key and I cannot start the car.

Car is a 2001 C Class.

Any ideas welcome??

Thank you very much

There may not be a simple solution to this.... but did you try your spare key here?

The fundamental unit that manages the key rotation is the EIS (electronic ignition system control module (N73). It may have to be replaced.

Hi thanks for response...unfortunately I don't have a spare key, just spoke to the benz garage and they can offer a new one within 3 days at a cost of £240

Very pricey but probably the best way to troubleshoot...I wonder if it could be the ignition switch itself?

cheers

I have only one key, just been to MB to pick up some brake pins but bottled out of asking the price of a key! I can get around 25% discount so that's ok,my key has been a bit hard to remove lately but as yet no trouble inserting it.

ohhh ok cheers

an update 4/10/10...with a bit of pressure on the key I managed to insert it into the ignition and the key clicked in and started the engine..turned the key to the left and the key would not turn all the way to left to release the key. With a bit of a jiggle and a little bit of pressure the key released..so looks likely that it is the EIS (N73).

will need to pop into the garage for diagnostic

many thanks, will update soon

Hi. What can one do if the key doesn't even go into the ignition. This morning when I sat into the car and tried to start the car - nothing - I couldn't get the remote key to move any little bit. The familiar click didn't happen. Is this a serious problem or is there a simple solution
