C220 CDI Automatic Gearbox

Hi,
I have recently purchased a C220 CDI (03 Reg). It was working fine when purchsed but now I am having problems engaging reverse gear after driving only a short distance. The lever goes into neutral fine but then wont go any further. If I sit with it in neutral for about seven minutes it will let me get it into reverse but this is too dangerous. I did have a play with the Standard and Winter mode selector switch and that worked fine initially, but now it is in S mode and I cant toggle it W mode. Could these things be related. Any ideas would be grately appreciated,

Cheers, Melvin.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you are not from US, since the cdi engines were never sold in C class here? Please fill up your profile with location and car model.
Your problem sounds like faulty shifter switch or misadjusted brake linkage. Go to the section that covers your model and hopefully they will have answers already there, if not the members there have direct knowledge about your model.

Did you (or somebody else) spill a drink over the auto shift stick? Be honest, now..

That would not be rare and could explain part of the problems. D/N/P selection however is mechanical on this model, could be an adjustment issue with the link from the gear stick to the tranny.

I am still a bit confused here about what is happening... A few questions.

When you start, are you in P? And then the car drives as normal briefly?

Before you move off, with your foot on the brake can you move the shift stick from P through R,N,D? Are these indicated correctly at the cluster?

When you cannot get the shift stick into R, what is displayed at the cluster?

This does sound like a mechanical problem here. DB could well be right about the shift rod. This is adjusted from beneath the car.

Could it also be the shift detent mechanism? No adjustment here, but maybe wear or damage. The shift detent is integrated in the Electronic Selector Lever module control unit (N15/5).

I do not think that the transmission mode switch (S16/5) can affect your shift stick movement problem. This simply selects which gear-change map is employed. I think that you have to be mobile to change mode.

shift lock override

Further thoughts...

Do you know that you can 'unlock' a shift stick stuck in P by pressing the shift lock override lever?

On a W203. remove the coin holder in the central console, and use a pencil through the right-hand hole to depress the overide lever while moving the lever into any other gear.

I do not know if this works if you are stuck in other gears (eg R) ...

Thanks for your replies to my problem.
Dont think that anything has been spilled on the shifter.
keyhole, When I first start the car I can move the gear stick straight through to drive and all the way back to P, but if I drive the car for any distance and then try to go to reverse the lever wont go to reverse. I can move it to neutral. If I then wait with it in D for about ten seconds It will allow me to engage R.
Is it normal to have to wait or should you be able to engage R instantly.

Cheers, Melvin.

PS I am new to the forum. Could you point me in the right direction for a specific forum for my car.
Thanks for your help guys, I have read your comments and the Brake theory seems interesting.

Keyhole,
with my foot on the brake I can move the gear stick straight throug from P R N and D and back again. I only have the problem with reverse after I have driven the car any distance. I can the move the stick to neutral but not reverse straight away. I usually have to wait probably ten seconds or more and then it will move to R. The instrument display shows N when I am trying to get to R,
Cheers, Mel.

When you get to this page at the site:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/ scroll down until you find your model listed. ie, W203 C-Class 2001 - 2006.
That's where all your fellow C-Class buddies hang out - for your future posts.

As it happens, your auto gearbox is type 722.6 - which is widely used on recent MB cars, my 2004 CLK for instance.

About this problem. I now understand that the gearshift initially behaves correctly, then later it doesn't....

No - you should be able to engage R instantly. But the car must be stationary at the time!

I have only just found a page in the WIS that covers the 'locking' of the gearshift in either P or R for good technical reasons. In your case, it might be a spurious signal causing this problem, and not the mechanical cause suggested earlier.

The gearshift is locked in P if:

a) no voltage to N15/5 (electronic selector lever module control unit), and
b) the brake pedal not depressed.

The gearshift is locked out of R if:

N15/5 'thinks' that the car is travelling more than 8 km/h.

I have no idea what is causing this fault, but I can post the relevant page if you're interested.
