Practical nostalgia

First timer, here, dipping in the toe. Thanks for reading.

I once owned a perfect (honest) 72 280SE. This was back in the early 90s, and it was far and away the best car I ever owned, until it sacrificed its life to save me from a drunk who ran a light and plowed into us, totaling 3 vehicles (though I still drove it home.

Emerging now from a recent motorcycle accident, I need to give up stick shifts and get back into an automatic. I'm not at all a fan of new cars and I'm contemplating an older (70s) Benz again. Back in the 90s this wasn't much of a stretch, but 15 or so years later, I'm wondering about practical matters.

My question is, assuming I were to pick up a clean, strong runner, (and I have a neighbor with a similar vintage 280 with a great mechanic), does a 280 or a 250c from the early seventies make for a good only car? Reliable enough for around town and occasional 1000 mile road trips? If you think yes, what kind of milage should I be looking to stay under? And any other advice much appreciated.

Thanks!
