Just got a 1981 380sl
I recieved a 1981 380sl 3 days ago and I'm gonna search the heck out of this forum. I have already found out that a previous owner has replaced the single row timing chain out for a double. I found out this is pretty important from this forum so I'm already ahead thanks to you guys! The car's body isn't to bad but she runs pretty rough. I'm sure it didn't help that after sitting for about 5 years I topped up the fluids and took it on a road trip. 1400 kms to get home and about 8 litres of oil to keep it running. So far I have noticed a few problems which I am gonna try to research here. to list a few the idle is really bad so I'm hoping to be able to adjust the timing easily. After I replace all the plugs, wire, cap, rotor and such. Maybe then the V8 will actually perform like a V8. I'm hoping the oil leak is an oil pan one or something not to hard to repair. No heat/air con is also an issue but I have already seen a few posts on this. I see it also has an outstanding recall in the sub frame and checked underneath and it doesn't look as though it has been done. tranny seems to slip abit and the valve assembly between the rad and the heater core seems to be leaking. Both tops are in pretty good shape and there seems to be a new exhaust and tires put on it.
Looks like I have alot of research and work to do but it's all worth it when you are crusin down the highway with the top down and the tunes blasting. Nothing like it!
Thanks for looking and I would really appreciate any tips on what to do or how to do it. I have never worked on this quality of car and I already marvel at the innovation from 29 years ago! Who would have thought that 29 years ago they had the wires for the rear defrost in the glass not on top. Crazy....
Thanks in advance
