fuel gauge

hello n guy i am a recent owqner of a c180
and it is confusing me some what
problem is fuel gauge it tells me full / empty/ half full /or nothing at all
so how many miles can i expect on full tank
and where is sender unit and how do i access it to remove it to clean or replace
and whats average mpg
and should i use high octane fuel or low octane fuel
some one suggested i brim tank and this would fix problem
but still not fix this problem
