You can buy GPS now for less than $50.
I would advise you to go to a place where you can play with them, or find a friend who is having one. I found those small things user unfriendly and hard to see. For years I am using $29 GPS antenna and software from Delorme that is downloaded on my laptop.
This way I have 14" screen, that can be divided on 3 separate maps of different scales. This way in the city I can see the turn with 10' accuracy not the "turn right in 100 feet" where you see 4 streets on that distance.
