Smile Sirrus/XM radio question

Hi all,

Our recently acquired SLK 320 has the standard AM/FM antenna mounted on the drivers side rear 1/4 panel, AND it also has a satelite radio antenna mounted on the trunk. Can't tell if its Sirrus or XM. The trunk mounted sat. antenna has what looks like factory wiring down the right hinge and into the body of the car.

BUT the radio that is in the car has no choice for sat. radio. It is the standard Benz radio with buttons for radio, CD,Tel, and Tape.

Am I missing something in the operation of the radio, or has a sat. radio been removed and the standard radio put back in? I understand satelite radio needs a subscripton to work.

Thanks, Dave

If confusion is a destination . . . . we have arrived.

The antenna is aftermarket. The factory would never run a wire down a hinge. The last owner took their portable radio with them and left the outdated antenna on the car. That is what it sounds like happened. If you would like to get satellite radio, you can go purchase a portable receiver, put a mount in your car, and use a FM modulator, cassette adapter or an aux input on the radio (if it has one). You could also replace the entire head unit with a newer unit that has a receiver built-in, but I wouldn't recommend due to the excessive cost on an 8 year old SLK. The portable unit would be the way to go.

Since Sirius or XM didn't exist in 2002, there isn't a factory installation, although it probably arrived on later R170.

The antenna HAS to be on the trunk and wire HAS to run down the hinge because with the folding top, the trunk lid opens both ways, i.e. tilting forward normally or backward for top retraction. It is FOR SURE the way factory installations on later cars are done.
