Replace Nav / Stereo

I'm sure this must have been asked before but I am new to the forum. I own a 2005 SLK 350 and the nav and stereo seem outdated. I inquired about an aftermarket unit that I can have installed for about $2500 which would be state of the art. The shop said they can get the steering wheel controls to work with the new aftermarket unit. However one shop told me that once the Comand is disconnected / removed the diagnostics are gone and the car will not pass a mandated government inspection (I live in New York, USA). Any truth to this or any advice? When you put in a different unit what is affected? Thank you very much! If all else fails will Mercedes put in a 2010 unit and about what is the cost? Carl

I don't live in NY, so I can't answer that parts about the inspection..... but it sounds like you should saving for a new car. Throwing $2500 at a 5, soon to be 6 year old SLK, for a non-essential stereo system makes little to no sense whatsoever. You might be able to recoup like $100-200 upon resale of the $2500 'investment'. That $2500 could be put into a savings account and used as part of down payment on your new fully updated car. You can cross the 2010 system off your list also, because that would cost north of $5000....if it could even be done. What you could do right now is go buy a very nice cutting edge Garmin unit for $300 and use that to navigate. It is 10x better then an 05 command system, and you can use it in any car at any time, plus you can update it.
