THinking of buying a 1998 E320...

I wan to buy a 98 e320 because of the v6 platform, also cause i love the body of these years. I have a few questions..If I buy one of sourse im trying to get one with low mileage..but what would be considered low mileage on A 1998 e320? is 150k miles too much and how many miles do you have on your? is it running good? thanks

Think about buying a 2000-02 post face-lift, rather then pre face-lift. A search of the W210 section will yield many results. The only reason to go after a 98/99 would be for a E300D, otherwise avoid them.

Face lift is strictly cosmetic, although those cars have few more gizmos, like wheel paddles or triptonic tranny controll.
Mechanically all 320 V6 are the same drivetrains
I've seen one on ebay in pristine condition, running perfectly at 28X XXX miles.

Personally I like the M112 engines in the E320. They have some typical issues like mass air flow sensors need cleaning or replacing every so often. The most mileage that I have had on this engine in one of my own cars was about 160K or so when I sold it. The engine was still running strong at the time. Keep in mind that this engine is twin plugged so when it come time to replace the plugs and wires, you will be getting 12 plugs. Other than that, it is fairly easy to work on. Some things are a pain but not much.

Over 100 things were revised on the 2000 model, including the repair prone electronics and the build quality (which increased noticeably). The newer cars also have less problems because they are newer and have generally covered less miles, plus they will commend and retail better resale value in the future. For minimal $500-2000 upgrade cost to go from a 99 to a 2000, its worth it 100%. You will see the money later (well unless you trash the car).

All true, except make that over 1000.

There's a chance of telephone integration on the facelift cars, too, and practically speaking no chance on the earlier versions. It doesn't take long for some of today's "goodies" to become must-haves. One could even find a facelift car with navigation, although it's stone age compared to 2010.

One thing to remember when looking at one of these old models is that almost all the rubber is going to have to be replaced, if not now, then soon. I have a '97, and I've replaced a lot of rubber. And, when I check the conditions of some of the o-rings that are parts of the engine that I replaced just a few years ago, and see what condition they are in now, I can't imagine the conditions of all the o-rings inside the pistons.... Frankly, the next time I buy another benz, it'll be something much more recent, but after the first half of the 2000's (I'm generalizing, of course), because that's when mercedes (bmw too) dropped the ball on reliability.

Well... to my knowledge there are no rubber orings inside the pistons
At least with all those leaks on newly purchased 1987 model, those don't cost any problems.

Haha, did I say IN the pistons? I should've known, with all the careful readers here, you would have caught me on that.... I meant around the pistons, the compression and control rings....

Frankly, it's a marvel that those things survive the combustions for that many years. It's true, those old cars do survive the test of time!
