Wink Hi from Belgium!

Hello, I'm Eric and I just became a new member.
I own several Benz's. The last one I've aquired is an C140 or should I say a W140 CL, or just an S-klasse coupé from 1997?
I've been into Benz's all my life. For some years I restored old models such as the /8.
I bought the C140 knowing there would be some work on it. The car was broken into, the alarm damaged, the battery won't charge, the central locking system doesn't work. The CD's from the nav system stolen. But if you put a good battery in it, everything works fine except for the central locking. I've already taken the pump out to check if it needed to be reset. But it works fine. But it won't close the doors nor the trunk.

engine, body and interior are in good condition though. Monday we'll put her on the diagnose bench to find out where the fault may be lying. I do not think it is the alternator, but we'll test that too.
Should any of you have any experience with this kind of trouble, and could give me some useful advice, please feel welcome!

Once I got her running again, I will start to bring her back into mint condition.
I'll keep you all posted of the progress I make!

Hi, Leapyfish, thanks for the reply.
But ...

I don't have an SLK but an 1997 W140 S-Class Coupe.
The links you post may be interesting, I will certainly look into them later.
I already bought a W140 service manual on DVD.
Since my last post I dismounted the driver door's handle with the broken lock and ordered a new one with a simple flat key from MB directly. It should arrive today. Price: around €130 plus VAT (21%).
We discovered that both master keys had a strange fault: when you put in new batteries, and push the button, the led light comes on shortly as it should, but when you try it again, nothing happens. Next thursday I will drive my car to a MB service garage and have it diagnosed. I shall probably need a new masterkey. Should anyone out there have any experience with this kind of problem with masterkeys and knows how to solve it without buying a new one (€200!), please come forward!
My costs so far:
- alternator repair: €203
- new Bosch 100 Ah battery: €190
- door handle with lock and flat key: €130
- classic maintenance (oil; filters, etc.): €400
- body and interior cleaning & restoring products: €200

Further costs to foresee:
- diagnose: €200 (approx)
- masterkey: €200
- initializing the masterkey, the alarm system and central locking system: €200 (approx)
- Bellini Croma Blue 18" wheels: €800
- restoring the original alloys: €200 (with polished rims)
- chrome mirrorcovers with built in leds €150
- leather restoration set: €150
- navigation CD's: €700 (early Command series)

Should anyone have these cd's and would be willing to make copy's for a more modest price, I would be very interested!

I want my C140 to be back in mint condition in about 1 year's time.
I will post pictures of the advancement regularly.
At this moment I am cleaning all the dirty carpet parts with a very good product that really restores them to a new condition.

The only thing I can not repair are the cracks in the steering wheel. The wheel has parts in brownish-grey leather which are still very nice, but inbetween it is a woodgrain plastic imitation that is full with cracks. I shall have to replace that too. Again, if anyone has a good steering wheel, make me an offer!

That's it for today.
You'll hear from me soon.
