Parking Brake Release Handle Help

My 1993 400SEL's parking brake release handle pulled away from the cable when trying to release parking brake. It looks like everything is intact, except the cable itself is protruding from the dash about 4 inches. Anyone know how I can repair this?

Did the nipple break off from the cable end? This locks into the release handle. If the cable has to be replaced, the foot pedal will have to be removed.

No, the nipple is still on the cable end, and it looks like I can still put in back into the plastic handle. I'm still wondering how the cable that is sticking out will retract back?

If you saw an 'exploded drawing' of all the parts, do you think that you could figure it out? I have a WIS here.

Just look at the illustrated parts breakdown in EPC.

OK - here's some information. I've included the text to give you an idea of the complete replacement.

I'm wondering if the cable other end nipple has broken off, or the item that holds it (#10) has broken? I see that there is a special tool for dealing with that. If that becomes an issue, I can show you the drawing and you could make one yourself.
