Which wagon?: 2000 E320 vs. 1981 300TD

Hi,

I've owned a 1983 300SD for some time now and my wife and I love it. We have spent a bit on servicing but I try to do most that I can myself.

We want to get rid of our '95 BMW 525i wagon for an MB with rear facing 3rd row seats for our growing family.

We've found these two vehicles for the same price and are struggling to make a decision..

2000 E320, silver, with gray leather, 3rd row seats, 153k miles.
and
1981 300TD, silver, blue leather interior, 114k miles. No 3rd row seats but I found an after market company that supplies them for $650.

Both are up kept, in great shape and two owner cars.

Which is best overall? And most importantly biggest?
I thought this would be the best place to get some help..
Thanks in advance.

IMHO the E320 looks great but there is not too much you can do for yourself,
With the 300TD, looks like you already have experience with W123´s with diesel engines, and they probably have the same engine ......
I´ll go for the 300TD

(i have one also)

W210 supplies way more leg room than W123 and W124 if that matters. The rear seats are rated for about 100 lb occupants in them, but I had my 6-2 friend sitting there with his wife fighting "the few extra pounds" and they were comfortable cruising Las Vegas Strip.
As much as I prefer diesels for economy and long life, this is tough choice.
The couple generations difference in technology makes the younger gaser more economical and way more powerful engine. Add ABS, traction, airbags in newer car, not to mention more sophisticated AC and controls. So unless you plan to drive the car for more than 300,000 miles, the winner is 2000 model hands down.
And I did own both of those wagons.

BTW the W210 section is the most active and gathers most advanced DIY members IMHO.
Only W163 is getting close to it.
So at least 95% of issues on W210 are well covered there.

I can only speak from my experience, having had an 85 tdt. I was a very solid car with a minimum of electronics, a very economial engine, and a roof system that actually supported weight. I would further reconsider adding a third seat since the depth in that storage compartment is very limited.
The 01 320 being a good car but the roof is flimsy and tends to deflect at the car wash, at least on my car the engine is very solid, I have had two cases of A/C leaks, and rear window regulators failing. The third seat will suit children, but adults will be cramped.
There were rust issues in the bottom of the doors, faulty crankshaft pulleys, and other small issues that an owner can atted to.
Of course 17 years is quite an age difference, the 2000 wagon is larger than your BMW.

To counter balance bad things about newer models
W123 are famous for transmission glitches, dying odometer, never working tachometers and CC, as well as vacuum system that can cost you in thousands to keep operational.
Don't forget the power antenna failures.

wagon

Thanks everyone for your replies.

After much consideration, it looks like we'll be going for a newer E320 wagon.
I would prefer the classic 300TD as it has great lines and diesel power and will probably appreciate in value, but my wife says that size matters and therefore the newer E320 wins, not to mention the extra goodies that it has.

I have since found two more E320's, a '99 and a '98 for sale in town with just over 100k and for great prices, me thinks, so the hunt is on. Unless I hear bad things about those year models or they're beat up, it looks like one of those will replace our old beamer.

Cheers,
-C
