faded headlamps

my 2000 w220 s320 headlamps are badly faded. replacement lamps go for more than 6000 euros from the local dealer. is it advisible to try and find them on the internet and how am i going to know that what i get is the right stuff? there are some local guys who claim they can file out the worn layer and polish the lamps back to new, does that work or is it a scam to milk desperate car owners?
hoping to get the most useful help from you as always.

Several places sell headlight restoration kits, so that you can restore the headlights yourself. Here is a link to one of them:

I have used one of this kits. There will be an improvement but do not expect it to look like new. My slk has one new headlight and even with the use of one of these kits you can tell the old from the new. Neverless, some improvement is better than none.

The 3M kit did a very nice job on my 210.
