Post Hello from Essex, England

Hi everyone,

Had my 1985 280SE for about 5 years and use it when the weather is nice. Interesting history - was used for 3 years from new and then garaged for 17 years - only doing about 3k miles in that period. Not the best start as when I bought it I took it to my local garage for replacement valve stem oil seals and the whole job just escalated to cost me nearly £3,000 (engine rebuild) and I had to sell my wife's car to pay the garage bill! Needless to say, she wasn't that impressed and still refers to my beloved as "the heap". My plan is to completely restore the car (it doesn't look half bad but its now starting to show its age) so no doubt will be on the forums asking for advice (and hopefully contributing where I can). Not an engineer, wish I was, it amazes me how skilled mechanics can work.. maybe will get there with practice
Rob

Thanks - well, seals turned into new head gasket which meant skim, then new water pump, new brakes etc etc it was a catalog of "one thing after another"... all related to storage and have done a very happy 20k miles in her since then!

My poor old thing seems to have had a hard life, lots of bodgy stuff, not even sure what the engine is yet ! Think it's a 560 but logbook says 3.9 however it seems way to quick for that. Hope to have it running soon after the cam seized. If it runs ok I'll maybe keep it and try to doña rolling restoration, but I only have a limited budget. Anyway good luck with yours
