Best Diesel Mercedes for my daughter?

Looking for recommendations.

I am in the process of shopping for an MB diesel for my daughter and was considering the 1987 300d but just wanted to get some weigh-in or opinion on what years/models the community feels are best.

Cheers!

320cdi, than 320 Bluetec, than long break, than 300dt, than long, long break and all the mechanical diesels.
I did own all major MB diesels sold in USA for last 30 years. Each engine is good improvement over the older model.
The only exception was making aluminum heads in 1986, although those were still well performing engines till they overheat.
I bought 87 300dt for my son just couple months ago. Few replaced gaskets and orings and the car is ready to run another 20 years.

This is opinion but

it depends on your goals.

There seems to be general consensus that the 123 deisels are the most reliable, simple, long lived and easy to maintain.

If safety is your pimary concern, the newest car you can buy is the best. It is true 123s are tanks and in most instances will emerge from a wreck in better shape than their opponent BUT ... they are pre-airbag and the occupants may not be in better shape.

If fuel economy is your goal, newer diesels (CDI or Bluetec) are your hot ticket, particularly the V6 Bluetecs. However, they are not great cars for the DIY mechanic.

Your choice. Can't go too wrong with any Benz. My personal choice is the 123 but my wife is secure in a 2008 E320 Bluetec.

Let your daughter have an input.

Thanks for the input so far! I forgot one criteria that may slim out the field, my budget is 10k. I never finance cars so its cash in pocket only.

I am assuming fuel consumption and cost is of concern.
Honestly, I believe you'd be better off getting a modern car (even if not an MB), a compact hatch or similar, to stem away form maintenance cost.

Remember, 1987 was 23 years ago. Cars have improved since, and you could consider something fresh for your daughter. A w202, or w203 perhaps?

You'll be lucky if $10K gets you 25 mpg if you buy Mercedes.

$10K will get you a 40mpg VW diesel.

The VW will have all the latest airbags, ABS, etc., etc.

None of that on Mercedes unless you can find '96-'97 W210 diesel.

The '98 and '99 210 turbodiesels can also be had for around that $10K figure. The '87 300D ought to be half that at least I would think.

Thanks all!

I have certainly widened my gaze.

I did search a bit for the TDI VW and the 1997-98 E300D and there certainly seems to be some good values out there.

Any others I should consider?

Cheers!

Yes, but not on everyday base and for less than 10 grands it will be high mileage. Still worth checking.
Regardless popular opinions diesels didn't change that drastically with each model. Per my observation there is big difference between W123 and W124 where not only lot of safety features were added to cars, but the engines got high rise in HP and economy as well.
Another big rise is with cdi technology.
The difference between turbo diesels from 87 and 98 is not that big, although there are lot of electronic gadgets added to the cars and the seats are more comfortable.

I wanted to let you all know that we were able to find a 98 E300D w/72k miles - well within our budget.

Thanks for all the great advise, truly appreciate it!
