1985 300DT Turbo Diesel

I was wondering what a typical maintenance budget would look like for a very well maintained 1985 300DT Turbo Diesel w/ 60k miles on it?

My wife thinks I'm impractical (as usual) for thinking of buying this car.

Am I on planet Mars for thinking we'd be able to drive it for many years without breaking the bank (ie, spending more than $500 per yr for maintenance for the first few yrs)?

I realize it's a tough question, but if you have any thoughts about whether the maintenance bill would be:

a) <$500 per year
b) 500-1000 per year
c) 1000-2k
d) 2k+

The 123 is probably one of the best cars, the engine is very reliable, at that age rust would be of concern.

Is it going to be a daily driver or weekend toy? I would hope for the toy option. Finding a W123 Diesel with under 100k is nearly impossible today. I would advise you to keep the mileage as low as possible to maintain its status. There aren't a whole lot of things to fail on these cars, but age and prior history will get the best of your repair bills budget if it needs/will need a bunch of work due to it being an antique.

I found out that on each car you do have some rubber and plastic items deteriorating at about 10 years of age. On some cars it will be 7, on others 12, but it will be there.
W123 doesn't have too many plastic things, but even if the leatherette is still holding, the headlight doors, the power antenna, vacuum power system, the engine mounts and all the suspension bushing will have to be replaced at least twice at this age.
If the seller didn't do it in last few years, don't be surprised when you get lot of headaches.
