distinguish 350SD vs. 300SD

How to distinguish 350SD engine from 300SD?
The seller is only providing info "300-series engine"
It could be 350SD or 300SD.
I know 350SD are rod benders (most of them ?) but 300SD are not.

I never owe one, so I'm asking.

No idea what is good/bad. From the WIS:

300SD (USA) - model 126.120 - engine 617.951
350SD (USA) - model 126.134 - engine 603.970

also
300SDL (USA) - model 126.125 - engine 603.961

If you get the VIN, we might work out what engine the car has.

Did MB used different engines in W140's 3.0L and 3.5L?
There more I'm reading about those engine modes there more I'm confused :-/ as to what model has what power-plant.

Info from WIS & List of Mercedes-Benz engines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sales designation W140 range - up to 400. Not sure if all versions reached the USA.

S300 Turbodiesel - model 140.035 - engine OM606.961
300SD Turbo/S350 - model 140.134 - engine OM603.971. *
300SEL 3.2/S320 - model 140.033 - engine M104.990. straight 6, 3.2 liter
400SEL/S420 - models 140.043 & 140.063 - engines M119.971 and 119.981

* Also, a comment from Wiki reference engine 603.971.

"The 603 engine was (in)famous for several reasons: The emissions controls imposed in the US market led to the creation of a diesel catalyst, otherwise known as a trap oxidizer. Heat from these trap oxidizers caused failure of the aluminum cylinder heads on the first generation of 603-engined vehicles; debris from the traps could also damage the turbocharger. This first version was sold in the US from 1986 to 1987. Daimler-Benz will remove these traps for free, and if the turbocharger has been determined to be damaged it will also be replaced. Even without the heat from the trap oxidizers, the original #14 mold cylinder heads were weak and if overheated could crack.

In 1990 the 350SD/SDL debuted, using a larger-displacement 3496cc OM603 engine that had more torque and a lower top RPM. The engine lived on in the w140 chassis after the w126 production ended, as the 300SD or S350. By this time the cylinder head issues had been corrected. These 603.971 engined cars, however, had weak connecting rods that resulted in excessive oil consumption and numerous engine failures. While never formally recalled, Daimler-Benz replaced many engines under warranty, even somewhat after the original warranty term expired (at least for the original owner). Conventional wisdom holds that cars with these engines are generally to be avoided unless accompanied by proof of the installation of a factory replacement".
